Raul “Baby” Arango died at his home in Panama after a long illness, Monday, Nov. 30. Known as the “Caballero de la Politica” (Gentleman of Politics), “Baby” was loved by all who knew him. He was a successful entrepreneur, an avid horseman, the founder of the Liberal Party in Panama, Minister of Trade and Development, and was twice elected President of the National Legislative Assembly.
“Baby” was more than all that; he was a wonderful family man, a true friend to all, and generous beyond measure,” said Keeneland's Associate Director of Sales Tom Thornbury. “Those who knew and loved him will never forget the impact that he had on their lives, and he will be long remembered as one of the finest men that Panama ever produced. I will remember him as one of the 'best of the best.'”
The Clasico Confraternidad (Fellowship), one of the stakes races to be held during the 2015 Clasico del Caribe racing festival at Hipodromo Presidente Remon in Panama Dec. 12, will be run in “Baby” Arango's honor. His son, Roberto, along with several grandchildren will present the winning trophy.
